“Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all? And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his Lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?” (Luke 12:41-42 KJV).
These verses speak of the "faithful and wise steward"appointed by the Lord Jesus by their belief, in the context of grace, for stewardship, and readiness for the end times, rather than a message of fear or condemnation. A truly "faithful and wise" servant is one who understands the Master’s heart of grace and love. Faithfulness is not about strict religious obedience, but about sharing the good news of grace and feeding others with the "food" of the gospel of the grace of God.
The Lord Jesus is speaking to all who believe and totally depend on the sufficiency of His grace (2 Corinthians 12:8). He is urging us to be "wise" by embracing fully the New Covenant of grace in Him, where all of us who are truly redeemed by faith are empowered by it to serve effectively, rather than working out with self-effort for fear of being punished. We are therefore reminded in these passages not to be pushed by fear to work hard in self effort while waiting for the Lord’s coming, lest we be caught up drained out by religious rituals that leads to nowhere but away from our true God. We rest in the comfort of the Lord’s grace with lamps filled with oil through meditating and reflecting on His Words. His word is the lamp upon our feet and the light upon our paths (Psalms 119:105). We are to learn the lesson of the ten virgins, five of whom missed their bridegroom as they ran out of oil.
Let's not miss the moment coming soon, and must be a wise steward. We must eagerly reflect on the Lord’s parable with awareness that the virgins represent the believers, and the bridegroom represents the Lord Jesus who is coming. It is written: ““Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” (Matthew 25:1-13 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
