“Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.” (John 4:10 KJV)
The Lord Jesus totally disregarded the woman's somewhat spiteful remark alluding to the ongoing rift between the Jews and the Samaritans. He lifted their interaction to a totally new level about the 'the living water that He could give her.' Knowing the woman's level of thirst that only God's gift of living water can satisfy, the Lord feeds it into her curiosity. He challenged her with the intriguing statement 'if only she knew the gift of God.' Yes, if only she knew that He, who asks her for a drink, actually has the living water that she needs in her present state of spiritual dehydration.
The water that the Lord is ready to give her, and to us too by believing in Him, is one that wells up as a spring from within to those who receive it. This water flows from the throne of God to those who receive the saving grace of Christ Jesus by believing in Him and be born again, as it is written, Apostle John the beloved testified: “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” (Revelation 22:1-2 ESV)
