“In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)” (John 7:37-39 KJV).
These passages used the last day of the Feast of Booth celebration, for such momentous message the Lord gave. It's the climax of the week long remembrance of God's intervention while the Israelites' wandered in the desert during the exodus journey from Egypt. The Lord Jesus gave His life-changing invitation to the crowd attending the feast, and to us too, today. Addressing our 'thirst', as we all do, the Lord provided us the source for quenching. Not as the world or religion does, but as what God has designed for our spiritual contentment.
Using this event as backdrop for His invitation, it points to God's provision of water that came out from the rock in the middle of the desert during the Israelites' thirst for water in the wilderness. That was a foreshadow of the Lord's eternal provision of water to drink that He is now drawing the crowd to come and drink in this final day of the feast. He is drawing us too, with this reflection, as we travail this spiritual draught in this world we are in. This water is available to all who believes in Him - our Lord Jesus Christ. Using the analogy of a spring, a living water which also the Lord mentioned to the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:10), the Lord is pointing to the coming of the promised Holy Spirit that all receives by faith in Him.
This, He promised to everyone who believes. The moment the Lord Jesus was glorified by His rising from the grave, the Holy Spirit came and He is now available for us to receive by faith in the risen Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord gave this instruction to the disciples: “And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”” (Acts 1:4-5 ESV)
And I say, AMEN!
