“Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.” (Luke 21:14-15 KJV).
Our Lord Jesus Christ in these passages gives the disciples comforting assurance. Having warned them of trials and interrogations by political and religious leaders, because of their faith on Him and the hatred of the religious and political leadership, He tells His followers and us, not to worry about defending themselves and ourselves during such times of persecutions. He promised to give them and us "a mouth and wisdom" that our adversaries cannot contradict nor resist. It is a promise of confidence in His provision of grace. This assures us that in any crisis—whether standing before authorities, a boss, or in personal conflicts—as believers in Him, we should rely on the Holy Spirit to provide the right words of defense.
This is telling us that we do not need to mentally exhaust ourselves or "meditate and rehearse beforehand" on how to defend ourselves. Instead, this is a call to rest by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ allowing His finished work at the cross to be our source of confidence, peace and wisdom. This wisdom is not just a mental tactic or a set of rules. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit in us speaking in and through us. When we face difficult adversaries or stressful situations, our Lord Jesus Himself in us becomes our wisdom.
We must always be in the consciousness that as children of the Most High God by faith in Christ Jesus, our tongue is endowed with power of death and life (Proverbs 18:21). Hence, we speak in grace and life. It is written, our Lord Jesus proclaims: “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:36-37 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
