The Gospel of Luke 21:5-6 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” (Luke 21:5-6 KJV).

In these passages, our Lord Jesus Christ foretells the destruction of the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem, which brings the message about the transition from the Old Covenant of the law to the restoration of God’s unmerited favor in the New Covenant of grace. From the time of Noah after the flood up to the foot of Mt Sinai, God’s unmerited favor was in operation and made fully available to all who trust in the Lord Jehovah. The Israelites, in spite of their murmuring, were provided with pillars of fire during the night and pillars of clouds during the day (Exodus 13:21). They were sustained by God’s provision of grace and no one died in their journey up to Mt Sinai!

But, at Mt Sinai they rebelled and challenged God saying, “we will do everything the Lord has said.” Hence, the Lord gave them the Ten Commandments to make them realize they can’t do it, and that they need God’s grace. They need a Savior. They need God. That is what these passages convey when the Lord Jesus reveals the destruction of the temple - representing the effort of the flesh in the Old Covenant of the law, ushering in the New Covenant of Grace in Him who is our Lord Jesus Christ.

The temple, admired by the disciples, represents the perfection and holiness of the law that brought in demands for fulfillment which they worked hard by human effort. They set up religious rituals trying to fill its perfect demand that could not be done. The temple’s destruction will mark the end of the Old Covenant of the law, and the ushering in of the New Covenant in Christ Jesus - the Person of Grace. This recognizes the truth that God does not dwell in temples made with human hands (Acts 7:48), but among His people (Revelations 21:3). It is written: “The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.” (Acts 17:24-25 ESV).

And I say, AMEN!
