When God says...
“Children’s children are the crown of old men, And the glory of children is their father.” (Proverbs 17:6 NKJV)
This short passage covers three generations, four family roles and two reciprocal relationships to reflect on. Implied in these wonderful words are noble and loving families, a lofty goal. Also implied are wise parents with prudent foresight and obedient children appreciating them. Such an awe-inspiring plot!
This concise proverb has deep wisdom. Grandchild, grandfather, child and father are the four family roles portrayed. Three generations are represented. Grandfathers and their grandchildren and fathers and their children are two reciprocal relationships. So are granddaughters and grandmothers, mothers and daughters. Let each consider his/her multiple roles in realizing the blessing and lesson of this proverb.
This passage features a Godly family model. But in reality, with the worldly culture we are in, not all grandchildren are the crown of their grandfathers – a jeweled symbol of honor and reward. Many grandchildren are a disgrace and shame to their grandfathers. Not all fathers are the glory of their children – an object of great delight and adoring respect. Many children do not delight and respect their fathers this way: many fathers do not deserve such. Only virtuous children and grandchildren bring deserving parents and grandparents joy. Only wise and Godly grandfathers consider virtuous grandchildren a blessing.
In the world we're in, this is a timely point for reflection, where we are and where do we go from here. Time is short and getting shorter. Apostle Paul calls upon all parents and children, who trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, with these words: “Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:1-4 NLT)
