“So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33 KJV).
The Lord Jesus is pronouncing the core foundation of following Him, that unless one leaves everything and turn around to go follow Him, he can't be His disciple. He says that none can follow Him with worldly luggages towed behind. He directs with profundity to "give up everything," as He addressed the pompous and religious crowd who thought they can gain righteousness through their own works.
This passage gives the message aimed at making people realize they cannot follow our Lord Jesus by their own strength. He draws them to rely on His grace rather than their own abilities. This, therefore, is our call, to listen and respond to come before the Lord Jesus Christ as we are, freed from the shackles of the world, along with its myriad of merchandise and scheme.
As the Lord did to the crowd that followed Him wherever He went during His time in flesh on the earth, He is calling us too. Especially those who are behaving like the religious and worldly crowd, the moment is ripe to listen. It is written: “And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:34-36 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
