When God Says …

“And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” (Luke 23:38 KJV).

It is not revealed what’s the real motivation of Pontius Pilate being the Roman authority for ordering the inscription placed above our Lord Jesus on the cross, saying "This is the King of the Jews". It could be an act of mockery as this aligns with the insults hurled by the soldiers. But it can also be viewed as a profound, divine orchestration revealing God's grace and His covenant name. Or, it could be Pontius Pilate’s intent to use the sign as a political jab at the Jewish authorities, and a taunting at the religious leaders and Priests.

According to several fellow believers who depend on the Lord’s grace, the first letters in each word of the Hebrew version of the inscription that Pontius Pilate ordered, forms the acronym Y-H-V-H (יהוה)—Yahweh, the sacred, name of God. This was not a coincidence by chance, but a purposed divine design. The Roman soldiers and religious leaders thought they were mocking the Lord Jesus. But, on the other hand, unbeknownst to Pilate, God used his pen to format a supreme declaration: The man dying on that cross is Yahweh Himself, fulfilling the ultimate plan of redemption.

By using the three major languages in that time, effectively proclaimed the Gospel of the Grace of God to the known world, especially to those who were in Jerusalem for the Passover celebration to read it as they pass by the cross. Hebrew being the language of the covenant people and religious Jews; Greek being the language of human philosophy and wisdom; and Latin as the language of human military and political power, the inscription officially announced to the world the identity of our Lord Jesus Christ. All are given the opportunity to believe. Being His beloved, purchased through His sacrifice, as we believe, His identity and righteousness is imputed in us. The Scriptures declare: “By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.” (1 John 4:17 ESV).

And I say, AMEN!
