“The rich man's wealth is his strong city, And as an high wall in his own conceit.” (Proverbs 18:11 KJV)
This tells the reality that when there is so much focus on hoarding the material things of the world, in the Message paraphrase it says - “The rich think their wealth protects them; they imagine themselves safe behind it.” (Proverbs 18:11 MSG)
But, the psalmist says this: “They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches. Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God. Redemption does not come so easily, for no one can ever pay enough to live forever and never see the grave.” (Psalms 49:6-9 NLT)
Such a sad truth to come to grips with, especially to one whose wealth raised him to a pedestal of arrogance and conceit. Riches blind many from seeing that redemption is only by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave His life as a sacrifice for all. Hence, being His beloved, we are reminded always: “But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” (1 Timothy 6:6-10 ESV)
