“Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles.” (Proverbs 21:23 NKJV)
This passage sets a warning paradigm, as God reminds that the unguarded mouth and the untamed tongue in tandem can have one's soul grilled in hell.
Words spoken by our mouth and tongue carry the power of self-acquittal or self-condemnation (Mathew 12:37).
The tongue, small as it is, yet is a lethal force that needs to be closely guarded. It is written: “Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” (James 3:5-6 NIV)
Hence, for us all who are born again in the spirit and are children of God by grace through faith in Christ Jesus, Apostle Peter cautions in his exhortation - “Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing. For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.” (1 Peter 3:9-10 NLT)
