“And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him: No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.” (Luke 23:13-15 KJV).
Pilate, having received back the Lord Jesus from Herod, gathers the religious leaders and the people to declare that both he and King Herod found Him completely innocent of the charges they accuse Him with. The complete innocence pronouncement of our Lord in these verses is a profound picture of the substitutionary atonement He is about to fulfill. The faultless, unblemished Savior stands in place of the guilty. Pilate states explicitly, the Double Declaration of Innocence by saying: "I have found no fault in this Man" (v. 14) and add that Herod didn't either, with emphasis saying - "no, neither did Herod".
Though our Lord Jesus committed “nothing deserving of death” (v. 15), He would soon will be handed over to be crucified, as a picture of grace. Yet, Pilate declares: “lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.” Hence, it foreshadows the great exchange for all humanity. In grace, our Lord Jesus whose absolute faultlessness in front of earthly rulers, took the place of Barabbas - a convicted criminal. Our Lord takes His place to underscore the core message of the Gospel: the innocent takes the place of the guilty so believers can walk away free. This, our Lord Jesus Christ declares: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36 KJV).
And I say, AMEN!
