When God says...
"Better is the one who is slighted but has a servant, Than he who honors himself but lacks bread." (Proverbs 12:9 NKJV)
He reminds us to stay rooted in God’s way even if we are publicly unrecognized yet we are not a burden to others. We may not be considered for honor by people around us, but we have sufficiency of God's provisions. We are valuable in God's eyes. He saved us. He redeemed us by the blood of the Lamb. That's who we are to God. We give honor to Him alone, who provides us with favors and blessings.
We are not to act like a horn-blower who takes the place that belongs only to God. One who puts himself in a pedestal, who act like a person of importance to the world, yet in lack, and depends on the provisions of the world. As children of God through faith in Christ, we are to live honorably in the world, yet strive not to call the attention of the world to the honorable things we do. Rather, just let the world see us as we are - resting in the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are in no position to boast like a starving braggart.
If anyone wants honor, and boast about it, Apostle Paul gives these prompting words: "Take a good look, friends, at who you were when you got called into this life. I don’t see many of “the brightest and the best” among you, not many influential, not many from high-society families. Isn’t it obvious that God deliberately chose men and women that the culture overlooks and exploits and abuse, chose these “nobodies” to expose the hollow pretensions of the “somebodies”? That makes it quite clear that none of you can get by with blowing your own horn before God. Everything that we have—right thinking and right living, a clean slate and a fresh start—comes from God by way of Jesus Christ. That’s why we have the saying, “If you’re going to blow a horn, blow a trumpet for God.” (1 Corinthians 1:26-31 MSG)
