"An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning Will not be blessed at the end." (Proverbs 20:21 NKJV)
He warns us to refrain from the cravings and pursuits of greed. It drives a person to do things hastily and unjustly, against another, even their own family - parents and siblings. Like the parable of the prodigal son who hurried up to claim for his inheritance from his fully alive father, right on the face of his brother. And, this is in a culture where handing down of heritage is viewed a sacred occasion to mark a transition from a passing generation to an incoming one. Handing of inheritance is a moment of convergence of both the end and the beginning of two generations. Such a disruption by greed, the curse can be as profound as the story of the prodigal son illustrated. Not only that this prodigal son cast the curse unto his future children, grandchildren and generations of offspring, he squandered his own. The end result of his action upon his life was an unpleasant waste, as it is written: “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need.” (Luke 15:13, 14 NIV)
In that wretched state, unless one reverses it by entering into grace through repentance and by faith in Jesus, he heaps misery on them that follow him. But, there's hope. Our heavenly Father redeems by His love, as the gospel reveals: "From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ." (John 1:16, 17 NLT)
And, God by His love, provided a way for everyone to reverse any curse cast on them so no one will perish. It is written: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16 ESV) As we receive the Lordship of Jesus, He declared: "... I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." (John 10:10b ESV)
