When God Says …
“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.” (John 6:63-64 KJV)
The Lord Jesus Christ, intensifying His usage of the bread analogies which started with the feeding of over five thousand people with two loaves of barley bread and five fishes, continues to raise the bar of the truths He revealed. This puts the half-hearted disciples to the test. He used the physical bread to illustrate the true bread from heaven which is His flesh and blood. Yes, that's He who is the Son of God. Some were offended by it. Angst drew some of them to turn away.
The Lord's messages are in the spiritual realm. When He talked about eating His flesh and drinking His blood, He was not talking about His literal flesh and liquid plasma. He was referring to the spiritual provision by His Word, using the symbolism of the bread, flesh and blood to help us understand, how it is to live in the spirit realm. We are to be in the know that literal flesh is of no essence. It is the spirit that gives us life. And this is available to all who believes in Him and the sacrifice He did for us - that's everyone in this world. With the Lord knowing from the beginning who wouldn't believe, yet still He gave them the privilege of hearing these pivotal revelation, for them to have the opportunity for a turn around and believe. He has the abundant supply of grace to allow us make the choice of faith (John 1:16).
As we step into grace by faith in Him, we enter the spiritual realm to know that when the Lord broke the two loaves of bread to feed the crowd of over five thousand people, He was pointing to His body, His flesh - tortured and slayed, and blood spilled. Yes, that's His physical body the bread from heaven broken for our wholeness. Hence, we are summoned to remember Him, always. It is written, apostle Paul exhorts: “For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:60-62 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?” (John 6:60-62 KJV)
The Lord's declarations of truths raised the bar of entry to heaven higher, hard to understand and accept in the physical perspective of man. Hearing it is even made harder for some, let alone to follow by human effort. Maybe one would ask: why make it difficult? We should realize that ways made easy lead to destruction and death. Truth be told: “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14 NLT). Hence, looking for the easy way, many are deceived by the trappings of religion and the world.
Yes, these passages reveal that many failed to get hold of the truths the Lord declared. That's part of the winnowing process of God, ensuring that those who truly seek His Kingdom can enter unblemished by contagion of deception. As we can see through these verses many disciples who have followed and heard Him, turned away because of these hard truths laid before them. These signify that not all are truly learning and following in truth. There are many who follow for ulterior and selfish motives. Many cling to the comfort of their religious and worldly boxes, not willing to get out of it even as it leads them to a destructive end. The momentary box of comfort provided by the enemy of our soul, hinders many to move out into the best things in life - things of heaven and the supernatural, through grace by faith in Christ Jesus.
As these passages reveal many were offended by the truths revealed. Hinting of the upcoming event of His ascension, the Lord Jesus Christ asked the disciples what if they see Him ascend to heaven? That is the truth still to come raising the bar to the climax of His mission for our salvation. The reality is, spiritual things offend a person's physical nature. Our carnal and spiritual natures are at war within us. We needed grace to depend on by faith in Jesus. Scriptures say: “For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.” (Galatians 5:17 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:58-59 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.” (John 6:58-59 KJV).
Contrasting between the manna that the Israelites were fed in the wilderness (Exodus 16), and the "true bread from heaven" which God now provides (John 6:51) to all who believes, is the Lord's response to the crowd. They incessantly demand to out-do the miraculous provision of manna to prove the legitimacy of His deity (John 6:30–31). And He affirms His penultimate provision to be given to those who believe. He himself - His body and His blood, is the one sent from heaven. He is the everlasting bread of life for those who believe. Manna was temporal. They who ate it were dead both physically and spiritually, due to lack of faith. It was given through Moses to faithless people, who complained and grumbled against God (Exodus 16:7).
These verses specifically reveal that these truths were proclaimed by the Lord Jesus Christ in the synagogue in Capernaum where religious Jews gathered for their Sabbath assembly of teaching and prayers. Just like in this age of religion where religious people converge at their elaborate denominational and institutional places of assembly for their Sunday ritualistic worships. These give a nudging reminder of the Lord's mission to set everybody free, most especially those who are held captive by religion, then and now. He wants all to receive Him - the true bread from heaven. It is only by faith in Him in a personal intimate relationship we can gain eternal life. He came to establish closeness with us. Not religion. The reason He always called on the religious priests and pharisees during His physical ministry. He called them "blind guides" (Matthew 14:14).
Apostle John in his epistle reminds us with these words: “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” (1 John 5:20 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:55-57 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.” (John 6:55-57 KJV)
Listening to this talk of the Lord Jesus Christ as an ordinary person of the world and as a religious person like the Jews, this is so gruesome to hear and think. To a person in the natural perspective, this is a disgusting idea. Eating His flesh? Drinking His blood? This sounds like cannibalism! But, that is not the message the Lord is trying to convey. Hence, with this talk, the Jew's campaign to make Him king by force, started to dissipate.
So, what is "eating" that the Lord is promoting for everyone to do? Eating is believing! What is "drinking" that everyone must do? Drinking is believing in Him! We believe that his death — his broken body and his spilled blood — paid in full the penalty for our sin. And, we believe that his perfect righteousness is freely given to us in exchange for our unrighteousness.
So, by eating His flesh and drinking His blood, that is believing In Him and His Words by His grace, we, you and “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:52-54 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:52-54 KJV)
The Jews, rigidly focused on the physical, exactly like the present worldly culture we are in, were totally thrown off by these emphatic remarks of the Lord Jesus Christ. They couldn't get a grasp on His spiritually coded call that it is a must to eat His flesh and to drink His blood to gain eternal life. Comprehension and acceptance of these truths require a transformation of mind and heart. This calls for a paradigm lift from carnality to spirituality, from the natural to the supernatural. Using the analogy of eating His flesh and drinking His blood is one very deep and ciphered message the Lord gave to refine those who truly seek and follow Him. As already declared by the Lord Jesus, only those who are sent by the Father will come to Him and that when He receives them no one can snatch them from His and the Father's hands (John 10:28). They and we, all who rest in grace by faith in Jesus and are born again, get hold of these truths not in the physical, but in the spirit between us and God.
The moment we are born again by faith in Christ Jesus, we are lifted up to a new spiritual realm of understanding. His message and His Words become clear to our hearing, as we don't hear Him in the physical. We listen and hear Him, in our spiritual nature. Walking the narrow path to eternity, we constantly eat His flesh and drink His blood. Again, these are hard to explain and understand to those whose perspectives are in the flesh and religious systems. They're blinded to see things of the true God who sent His only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
In our life as a truly new creation, we set a daily habit of remembering Him by eating His body and drinking His blood, as He has established with the disciples. It is written, He said: “For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” (Luke 22:18-20 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:48-51 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” (John 6:48-51 KJV)
Pointing back to manna that the ancestors of the Jews ate in the wilderness, the Lord Jesus used the analogy of bread to convey His message to the crowds who are stalking Him for physical bread. As baked bread nourishes our physical body for a season then dies-like the manna, He who is the bread of life nourishes our spirit to live on and never dies, these passages affirm. The Lord Jesus Christ is "the bread of life." His flesh which is His Word is the bread that He will give to sustain our spirit unto eternity. As we eat off His flesh, by meditating His Words, and by believing in Him and His Words, we'll never die.
It all started, as “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1 NIV).
And the Word came down from Heaven, in the person of Christ Jesus to give life into this world. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14 NIV).
In Him, the Word and the Bread, by faith we shall live. “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.” (1 Corinthians 15:22 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:47 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” (John 6:47 KJV)
Having set the stage foundation with signs He has done, which affirms what was written by Moses and the prophets, the Lord Jesus Christ who is the person of grace and truth, again with emphasis, declares that it is solely by believing in Him we can have eternal life. Finding reasons not to believe is not to anyone's gain but loss. Such a great and devastating eternal loss it is, not to believe. Truth is truth. It does not change. It can't be denied. And, His spoken Word is lasting. It is unchanging. It is the key for living in this realm and for eternity. The option not to believe, leads to eternal condemnation (John 3:18), the second death (Revelations 21:8).
The Lord Jesus Christ is the bread from heaven (John 6:41) who sustains us. He is the light to our path, so we won’t walk in darkness (1 John 1:5). His hand holds and lifts us, as we humble before Him (1 Peter 5:6). He is the life of whom we live by the finished work He did on the cross. In Him, by faith, through the power of His resurrection we are a new creation. Having received Him our Savior by faith, the life we now live is His. It is written: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 KJV)

The Gospel of John 6:45-46 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.” (John 6:45-46 KJV)
Knowing that the Lord Jesus Christ is the person of grace and truth (John 1:17), by His Words, another truth is revealed. Invoking the writings of the prophets, He said: if truly anyone studies and follows them, they will learn of the truths from the Father. They will learn of and from Him! God is their teacher (Isaiah 54:13). And, they will receive His Words and will certainly recognize Him - the Lord Jesus Christ. They'll come to Him, believe and receive His Lordship in their life. That's the organic flow of those who truly seek God through the truth of His Words, they'll see the truth and recognize who truly is the Lord Jesus Christ.
No human flesh has seen the Father in a visible form. Only the Lord Jesus Christ who is from above. He has the authority to reveal the truth that came from the Father. Yes, we can learn from and of the Father when we truly listen and learn from Him through the Scriptures and by His still whispers (1 King 19:12) in our spirit. And He will send us to come to Christ Jesus for our redemption. There is a connection between the inward attraction from the Father and the external hearing of His Son in whom He shows Himself. It is God who takes the initiative by drawing us to Himself. The power to respond by conscious decision is vested in us.
As we come to Jesus we see God! It is written: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” (Colossians 1:15-16 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:43-44 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:43-44 KJV)
Nothing is hidden from the Lord. Murmurings are known to Him. Yet, as He is full of grace, He remains faithful with open arms to receive those who come in spite of their grumbles and whines. The key is to turn around, come by believing in Christ Jesus! Those who seek and come to God, the Father guides them and sends them to the Lord Jesus Christ. We just simply come to Him. No side trips. Go direct to the Lord of Hosts, not encumbered by rituals of religion designed after pagan practices, traditions and precepts of men. Ways of religion do not send anyone to the true Son of God. Only those who are sent by the Father guided by the voice of His Words will find the true Son of God - the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
So, let's keep this reminder at heart. It is written:“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” (James 4:8-10 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:41-42 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven. And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?” (John 6:41-42 KJV)
When the Lord Jesus invoked the holy name of Jehovah, I AM, the Jews who heard Him were drawn back to the writings of Moses. But, adamant in their blindness, they failed to see the truth. They see the Lord through the lens of their religion and human mindset. All the Lord's claims are hard to grasp for them who are exposed to do good works by self effort under the law, when He said by grace the works expected from them is to believe (John 6:28) in Him who came down from heaven, full of grace and truth (John 1:14).
When the Lord declared, I AM the bread from heaven, in the view of many, then and now, that's impossible. In their view, he was simply just like us. They saw him grew like every other child in their midst. Also, as earlier declared by the Lord, these people are pursuing Him not for truth but for the excitement and free food. Hence, though they have already seen miracles and signs, they kept on asking for it and at the same time dismiss Him as an ordinary man like us.
To see who the Lord truly is, we have to let the power of His Word transform our mind and heart by seriously ingesting His Words in our reflections. Let His Words speak to us. Hear Him by His Words. Let's be not like them who are lost. “They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:19-24 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:38-40 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:38-40 KJV)
These passages serve as serious nudge to all who are wise to understand and not let themselves dumbly be held hostage by wrong believing on a devil-designed deceptive system of religion. Yes, these bring to light for examination what many are believing in. Is it as what God said in His holy and written Word? Certainly it's not! Religion is not of the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who sends His only begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Religion collides head on against what God says.
The Lord Jesus came down from heaven not to establish enterprises and institutions of religion following precepts purportedly of god, but looking to images carved by men and following cues of the world. He came sent by the Father to do His will to make us (also sent by the Father to Him) one with Him in an intimate spiritual relationship. So, that no one is lost, we look only to Him, the Son - Christ Jesus our Lord, and believe to have life everlasting. In Him alone, we are raised to eternity on the last day.
Hence, as His children, born again by faith in Christ Jesus, Apostle Paul gives us these reassuring exhortation: “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:35-37 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John 6:35-37 KJV)Life without the Lord Jesus Christ is driven by hunger and thirst for everything that senses and tastes crave in this world. That's what these passages put us in the know. Content is found only by receiving the Lordship of Christ Jesus in a personal intimate relationship through grace by faith in Him. Not by religion as many are deceived to follow like those religious Jews that crucified the Lord. When we receive Him - the bread of life, we'll never hunger nor thirst!
Yet, many, though saw the signs, never believed. Even in this age, with the revelation through the scriptures, still believed not. The reason is they're not sent by the Father to come to Jesus. Why? They never truly seek the Lord. The key is - we must truly seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). We are promised, when we seek we will find (Matthew 7:7-8). We'll never miss it, as the Father sends us to Jesus, these passages reveal. He is the only way to the Father!
In Him by His grace through faith, we are secure in His mighty hands. None can snatch us! Secured by His love, nothing separates us from Him. “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:35, 38-39 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:34 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.” (John 6:34 KJV)
The crowd seems to react extemporaneously with interest to the Lord's revelation for the bread of God coming down from heaven. This is such a compelling plea for us to follow and do, from the heart. This crowd though, seemed fixated on material food that they have partaken out of two loaves of bread and five fishes. They are either uninterested or totally out of sync with the Lord's spiritual messages. With a frame of belief system they have that has been corrupted by the doctrines of their religious priests and pharisees, it is of no wonder.
Asking the Lord to "give us this bread" is right on spot. This is the prayer we must express unto the Lord our Heavenly Father. It is the prayer a person must declare from the heart to demonstrate total dependence in His grace. Everything we need both physical and spiritual are from heaven. Hence, as one of the disciples asked, "Lord teach us how to pray." Our prayer always must be first and foremost for our spiritual bread, which is the Words that come from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). It is written: “And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread,” (Luke 11:2-3 ESV)
And I say, AMEN!

The Gospel of John 6:32-33 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.” (John 6:32-33 KJV)
In these passages, the Lord Jesus corrected the people when they invoked that their forefathers' eat Manna in the desert saying about Moses, 'He gave them bread from heaven.' But the manna was the shadow of the true bread the Father is sending from heaven. “Jesus responded, “The real significance of that Scripture is not that Moses gave you bread from heaven but that my Father is right now offering you bread from heaven, the real bread. The Bread of God came down out of heaven and is giving life to the world.”” (John 6:32-33 MSG)
This crowd is really very amazing, with signs after signs manifest before them, they keep on asking for signs. And the Lord Jesus reminds them again and again. And we should be reminded, too. “Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:10-12 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:30-31 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” (John 6:30-31 KJV)
These people, continue to think about food, with demands for signs despite being already feed miraculously with two loaves of bread and five fishes more than five thousand of them including women and children. They brought up how their ancestors, in the wilderness, were fed with manna - the bread from heaven. They are so hung up on material things, shackled by religious rituals, sacraments and traditions. Hence, not only are they missing the works that God requires by believing which the Lord Jesus just told them (John 6:29). They are missing the heavenly rewards, as they remain to trust in their own good deeds of religion and of looking to the law, instead of dependence on grace by looking to Christ Jesus for salvation (Romans 10:2–4).
This crowd who had been inculcated by their leaders with religious doctrines, customs and traditions were unfortunately lost from the truth of God's Words given through Moses and the prophets. The Lord Jesus said to the Pharisees, Sadducees and Priests: if you believed Moses, you would have believed me (John 5;46-47). When they brought up Manna the bread from heaven which pointed to the Lord Jesus Christ, they exposed themselves of being totally devoid of the truth of God's Words. They would have discerned who the Lord Jesus Christ is, now present in their midst. Illustrated by the physical bread at the Passover supper, He declared of His body: “Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”” (Matthew 26:26 ESV)
And I say, AMEN!

The Gospel of John 6:28-29 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” (John 6:28-29 KJV)
These people finally asked the most impactful questions. What does God require of us to do? What work that leads to eternal life we must do? What matters most in this realm of living? The answer my friend is: Believe that God sent Jesus to be our Savior! No observance of the law (Romans 3:20; Galatians 2:21). No works of self-effort. No trying hard to do your best, by rituals of religion! Those are filthy rags in the eyes of God (Isaiah 64:6). We must believe in Him, the Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 5:13). And, empowered by His Word, we labor to enter His rest by grace through faith in Him (Hebrews 4:11-12).
To you and I who are wise to ask, and to them who asked the Lord, we must be firmly settled in faith that: “Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”” (John 6:29 NLT)

The Gospel of John 6:27 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.” (John 6:27 KJV)
The stage is set with the crowd that the Lord Jesus Christ miraculously fed earlier, following Him to Capernaum. On the face of it, this looks good with these people seeking the Lord, drawn by the wondrous signs they witnessed. Unfortunately, they were not seeking the Lord though, per se. Rather, they are after the show part of it and the give aways (John 6:26). And, the Lord is not after their fancy following. He is after the truth to be revealed to this crowd, of whom He felt deep compassion.
This passage is not giving the license for laziness. We are to work and take care for our physical needs and sustenance. But not driven by it. We are to be driven first and foremost by our need for spiritual nourishment. Our spiritual need is to take precedence over our physical need. Material things come naturally from abundant intake of spiritual food, by believing in Christ Jesus of whom the Father guaranteed to provide.
The Lord's ministry is not focused on fleeting material need, but eternal spiritual provision. This truth is what the Lord aims to clarify to them and to us, now! We ought not be consumed with temporary things like food and the excitement for spectacular show. Our attention ought to be on matters of eternity. We look to things that nourish our spiritual being, which is our true nature that leads to everlasting life. For our reminder, the Lord Jesus, after He fasted forty days in the wilderness, was tempted by the devil with bread. “But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”” (Matthew 4:4 ESV)
And I say, AMEN!

The Gospel of John 6:25-26 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.” (John 6:25-26 KJV)
After the Lord Jesus Christ fed the crowd of 5,000 men, not counting women and children, He sent the disciples ahead across the sea while He dismissed the people. Then He went up the mountain to pray (Matthew 14:22-23). They did not see Him take the boat with the disciples. Hence, they were curious how He arrived ahead of them in Capernaum. They were totally unaware of the miracles that transpired off their sight.
This crowd is curious why He avoided them. Their mindset was that He should be enjoying their adoration of Him. This mob is merely mesmerized on the spectacle of miracles, free food, and thoughts of possible relief from their political concerns and ills. From their perspective, He should enjoy the ride of publicity and following. They are only looking to Him for selfish reasons in the physical realm.
Hence, the Lord gave them a somewhat out off sync response aimed to expose their selfish motives. This scene is reflective of today's culture. The world in this day and age is out of whack and continuously becoming worse with a single-minded focus on material things. Research reports that in the United States approximately 2 out of 5 adults are obese. Everywhere in the world obesity is visually evident. Materialism is the focus of many, both gluttony and vanity - rich or poor. The rich wants more of it and the poor wants to have a piece of it.
The Lord is nudging the crowd and us all, to see the miracles affirming He is the source of everything for those who believe in Him. By faith in Christ Jesus, Apostle Paul gives us these overarching reassurance: “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.” (Romans 8:31-33 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:22-24 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone— however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks— when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.” (John 6:22-24 NKJV)
This is such an amazing scene to watch then and for us now to imagine, multitudes of people who may have been camping through the night in this grassy field. They were probably expecting a heavy breakfast after having been fed to the full the day before. But, now they stood on this side of the Sea of Galilee, with an empty stomach and empty shore. No boats in sight, except the one which the Lord's disciples took on without the Lord. With their anticipation for continued physical feasting dashed out, this could be a very confusing situation for these hungry people.
In such kind of scenario, the natural instinct is to seek a way to find where the Lord Jesus is. Hence, they scrambled to take onto the boats nearby coming from Tiberias, to pursue Him towards Capernaum (literally means Village of Comfort in Hebrew). They obviously noticed that the Lord and the disciples were not anymore where they ate the bread that was multiplied after the Lord gave thanks.
Focus and hunger for physical food and material things are such strong driving force for people to embark on a vigorous pursuit, by all means. Yet, those are of the least significance for living. That is evident in our day to day walk of life. But, we watch some people stepping on each other just to get ahead of each other on material things that banish easily. Yes, this crowd have chosen the right One to seek and pursue. But, they pursued Him for the wrong reason. They pursued the gift, not the giver! If we so happen to be like them, it's time to reflect upon the Words spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:16-21 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.” (John 6:16-21 NKJV)
After the feeding of more than five thousand people, this account of what the disciples did show an analogy of most our lives. At times after witnessing God's goodness, we set to an opposite journey into the dark. As always, storm arises making it a struggle to row our boat of life. Predictably, we set to a common destination we are accustomed and familiar with - a place of unbelief, represented by an unbelieving city called Capernaum. And, the journey is always marked by absence of the Lord Jesus Christ on the boat.
As we see in these passages, the Lord pursues us wherever we are, be it in the middle of the sea or anywhere, especially when the going gets rough. We will see Him in the midst of what we are in. When we see Him and 'willingly' let Him come to our boat by believing when He says: "It is I, do not be afraid.", we will set foot at our destiny in no time!
In Christ Jesus, allowing Him to love us first (1 John 4:19) by believing, so we can love Him, we have the assurance that He'll bring us to our predestined place of glory. The risen Lord Jesus revealed for us through Apostle Paul: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.” (Romans 8:28-30 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:14-15 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.” (John 6:14-15 KJV)
Interestingly, in these verses we can see that those men He just fed who witnessed the miracle He performed, got hold of the truth. They recognized Him as the one prophesied to come into the world. But, of course, as these passages reveal, it is for the wrong reason. They were seeing Him as the king to rescue them from their physical suffering under foreign subjugation. The Lord Jesus discerned their intent which is not what He came for. Hence, He slipped off away from them into the mountain, to be alone with the Father.
Being in their predicament under the brutal rule of the Romans, we'd understand these people's state of heart and mind. As with people in many parts of the world, during this time, these Jews were under so much pressure from the iron hand of Roman power, coupled with domineering religious zealots. They crave for a savior from their sufferings. That's the atmosphere that framed their mindset. Yes, their Saviour is in their midst but not as they see Him. He came to save them and the generations to come holistically. Not just physically. He came to save them and the world from their sin. He came to completely set us all free, once for all time, from the stranglehold of the forces of darkness, through believing.
Yes, He is king, but not as these men purported Him to be. Scriptures declare: “He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of Lords.” (Revelation 19:13-16 ESV)
And I say, AMEN!

The Gospel of John 6:12-13 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.” (John 6:12-13 KJV)
These passages are such profound reminders for us that as we put in the hands of Christ Jesus the limited resource we have it can become an abounding supply for all that we need and for blessing others. It is amazing to watch the fact that out of a kid's lunch thousands were all fed to the full. And, there were twelve baskets of leftovers to bring home — one basket for each apostle! I really don't think the Lord's only concern was avoiding waste or not leaving a mess. No, I believe he really wanted to leave an indelible memory on his closest disciples and to us today too, as we reflect on this event.
The Lord Jesus Christ is giving the disciples, the crowd and us the lesson that in Him, as we depend on His grace by faith, we're never in want and we're never without help! The Lord Jesus in one of His sermons said: ““So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6:31-33 NLT)
We must be firmly settled that He is our ever present Help! He is with us always! (Hebrews 13:5-6). And apostle Paul reminds in his exhortation to the church of Philippi: “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Philippians 4:19-20 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:10-11 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.” (John 6:10-11 KJV)
With His intent to feed thousands of people, seeking ideas from His disciples, all the Lord got were suggestions: to do nothing (Mark 6:36), very costly (John 6:7) and insufficiency of food (John 6:9). The Lord's response to all these, was to go ahead and feed them. With the Lord's supply of grace, it only needs submission to His power and will.
In these passages, we are put in the know of the crowd's specific count of five thousand men, which could be in total between ten to twenty thousand including women and children. He instructed the crowd to sit down on the pasture. “Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” There was a nice carpet of green grass in this place. They sat down, about five thousand of them. Such a very comforting demonstration of the Lord's supply of grace. In Him, we just need to rest on His pasture of grace. He provides, as we sit in the posture of receiving by faith. Then Jesus took the bread and, having given thanks, gave it to those who were seated. He did the same with the fish. All ate as much as they wanted.” (John 6:10-11 MSG)
This scene is reminiscent of the psalmist's song declaring, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” (Psalm 23:1-3 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:8-9 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?” (John 6:8-9 KJV)
The Lord Jesus Christ posed a challenge to Phillip, and His disciples, how to feed the throng of men, along with women and children in their tow. He knows how to feed them though, and how they will respond, but tests them in order to illustrate a valuable lesson (John 6:6). After suggesting to ignore the problem (Mark 6:36), with cost involved they thought it is better not to get involved.
However, Andrew's input about a kid's lunch of barley bread and fish, brings light about our life in the hands of Jesus. Our limitations can be used in ways far beyond what we can ask or imagine. We must not underestimate what can happen when a small amount of gifts and resources are placed in the hands of the Lord to be used for his glory, for the glory of the Father and for touching multitudes of people.
This is a marked fulfillment of God's promise about Jesus through Moses, as it is written: ““The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ And the Lord said to me, ‘They are right in what they have spoken. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.” (Deuteronomy 18:15-19 ESV)

The Gospel of John 6:5-7 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.” (John 6:5-7 KJV).
In this mountain, Phillip should have taken a cue from his great ancestor Abraham who declared: “So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”” (Genesis 22:14 NIV). Well, this is just the Lord's test-of-faith-moment on the disciples who presented several natural reactions to His query. In Mark's account, still along the lines of Philip's thinking, they suggested to just send them all away to get their own food! (Mark 6:36). Throwing money in the mix though, Phillip was for sure with an accountant or economist mindset. With his quick Math: “Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”” (John 6:7 NIV).
The Lord Jesus, of course, already has the solution, which will prove to be a great lesson of faith for the disciples, the crowd and most especially for us. It is an opportunity for us now to reflect on this awesome event about to unfold. Great things always happen in the presence of the One who is the source for everything we need. Scriptures declare: “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Philippians 4:19-20 ESV).

The Gospel of John 6:1-4When God Says...I Say, AMEN!
When God Says …
“After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.” (John 6:1-4 KJV)
This event in the other side of the sea of Galilee, also called the sea of Tiberias, is John's continued recording of the signs affirming the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is sometime after the healing of the ungrateful lame man at the pool of Bethesda. Great multitudes of crowd followed the Lord drawn by the healing miracles He did to those who were sick that came to Him. Sadly, these people's wows on the Lord's miracles are misplaced. They are after excitements and giveaways rather than the truth. They sought the gifts, instead of the giver.
The Lord Jesus went up to a mountain along with the disciples, to possibly position a good vantage point of the crowd that followed Him. He is about to perform major and phenomenal miracles, which makes a specially important reference to the nearing Passover feast. The focus of the Passover celebration, for the Jewish people, is remembrance of their rescue from slavery in Egypt.
The Lord Jesus, as He positioned on a mountain, is setting Himself to do what He came for, as He affirmed to John the Baptist. He said to John's disciples: “And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”” (Matthew 11:4-6 ESV)
