“And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved? And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.” (Luke 18:26-27 KJV).
In the midst of the Lord’s teaching of the impossibility for the rich to enter God’s kingdom, those who heard it, including the disciples, were shocked and asked - "Who then can be saved?" For a person driven to strive his best this is a question of wonder. Or, perhaps, this is somehow a question of someone not listening, as the Lord has emphatically said - “sell all your possessions and come follow me!”
The rich young ruler who encounters the Lord, represents human pride and self-reliance. By trusting in his own wealth and good works, he believed he could earn his way into heaven. Our Lord’s statement reaffirms that salvation is impossible to achieve through man’s self-effort, willpower, or even personal sacrifice.
We are therefore reminded, as the Lord Jesus points out, that what you cannot do on your own to be perfectly righteous, save yourself, overcome afflictions, or change a hopeless situation, God can. It is written: “But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,” (Romans 3:21-24 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
