The Gospel of Luke 19:41-42 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.” (Luke 19:41-42 KJV).

When our Lord Jesus was about to enter Jerusalem, the city of David of whose royal lineage He physically came, He wept beholding the city. He grieved because the people, especially the religious leaders, rejected their true Prince of Peace. They choose to rely on their religious performance and self-effort.

While the crowds and the disciples were celebrating Him, the Lord wept (sobbing deeply) because He saw their spiritual blindness. They wanted a conquering king, but missed their loving Savior offering unearned favor and peace. Trying to earn God’s blessings through the Law blinded them to see the free gift of His shalom (peace, provision and wholeness). The Law is so holy. It is given as a mirror that shows flaws, but it cannot save or provide the demands for righteousness before God.

True peace cannot be found in human merit. That’s the tragedy of the religious leadership in Jerusalem, as they look to their own works instead of resting by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Yes, those who depend in His grace and rely on His finished work on the cross as we should by faith, enter His rest. But those who choose to follow religion, and those who look to their self-effort to observe the law, shall not enter His rest. It is written: “For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, “As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest,’” although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” And again in this passage he said, “They shall not enter my rest.”” (Hebrews 4:3-5 ESV).

And I say, AMEN!
