“Many entreat the favor of the nobility, And every man is a friend to one who gives gifts.” (Proverbs 19:6 NKJV)
This is another spiritually breathe observation of Solomon, the first world's richest man - the wisest king ever lived. He experienced the crowd and constant pester of petitioners seeking his intervention on their behalf. The simple fact of life is that many will seek man's favor because of what he offers to them.
The man who gives gifts will have many friends. But - it has a flip side. If your friends are because of the dole out - be careful! Ensure to discern true friends in the midst of them. It's been proven, when the gifts cease, often so does some friendships. That is why being generous must be for generosity sakes only. And, giving should not be to buy allegiance and friendship. We are to be generous because it is a good thing to be generous. On the other hand, true friendship is not out of what you can get, but out of what you can give. A discerning spirit is what you need because you must know who your real friends are? In the end – they will be the ones who will stick with you, no matter what your bottom line is - and theirs, too.
We have that true loving friend in Christ Jesus, as we receive His Lordship by faith. He said: “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”(John 15:15 ESV)
And, He gives us life... “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:16-19 NIV)
And I say, AMEN!
