The Gospel of Luke 1:1-4 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, that thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.” (Luke 1:1-4 KJV).

This gospel of Luke opens up addressing to a person named Theophilus that only appeared, once here in these passages and another in the Book of Acts 1:1. The name Theophilus comes from two Greek words, "Theos" (God) and "Philo" (friend). So, it is addressed to the "friend of God." No one knows if this was a specific person. Perhaps this is a metaphor for all who approach God’s holy and written Words, seeking to know the Lord closely, so to be like Abraham who was called a friend of God (James 2:23).

Our belief in the One True God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Creator of heaven and earth, has never been and will never be a matter of ‘blind faith’. Luke who was a believer of the Lord Jesus Christ and a physician (Colossians 4:1), was apparently a Gentile, just like you and I. He partnered with and accompanied Apostle Paul in his third missionary journey, joining with him in Troas (Acts 20:5). This Gospel tells the good news of the human aspect of the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Luke decided to write this witness account to convey beyond the shadow of doubt those recorded by witnesses and ministers of the word who came from the beginning. So, all who have been instructed by God’s holy and written words, saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus our Lord, can stand in what truly is real and eternal. It is written, Scriptures affirm: “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”(2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV).

And I say, AMEN!
