“And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.” (Luke 1:29-30 KJV).
For a young virgin in the awesome presence of a messenger from God must be so overwhelming. Then topped with words: “…“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”” (Luke 1:28 NIV). That would be hard to fathom for an innocent young lady doing her mill of the day, un expectant of anything extraordinary. She has every reason to be troubled. One can imagine her mind churning for logical explanation she could grasp on to be in this moment of encounter, with her mind already full and grappling the affairs of her upcoming wedding. She could be confused.
The gospel of Luke, who is a gentile physician, deals with the physical nature of the Lord Jesus Christ. These passages set the heavenly-staged events of the enter-twinning miraculous births of John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus Christ. This put into right perspective the extraordinary nature of the fulfillment of God’s divine plan for the salvation of mankind. At this point Mary is yet unaware, but she is about to hear the consequential part she’s about to play in this plan of eternal significance. Yes, this has everlasting importance, not only for Mary, but all who believes in the only begotten Son of God who she is favored to bear. For He who is to come is full of grace and truth.
Yes, you and I, by grace through faith in Christ Jesus are favored, for He “who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,” (2 Timothy 1:9 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
