When God Says …
“And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” (Luke 1:31-33 KJV).
In these passages, the angel Gabriel delivers the astounding message he was sent for in this visit with the troubled Mary. There are several insights of existential importance about the Son that Mary will conceive. She “shall call His name Jesus”, which in Hebrew means “YAWEH saves” or “GOD saves”. And, "He shall be great" without compare. His greatness is beyond description. The psalmist says: “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.” (Psalms 145:3 NIV).
He shall be called “Son of the Highest” for this child is God Himself who humbled Himself. “Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,” (Philippians 2:6-7 NLT).
“The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David” for His family pedigree gave him a claim to the throne of David (Isaiah 11:1). And, He gets it! “He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever” fulfilling the prophetic words in Isaiah 46:3-4.
“His kingdom there shall be no end.” You and I belong to this eternal Kingdom as we receive Him who came through the womb of Mary. He takes our form in human flesh so that He can move in our neighborhood to be with us, so we can be with Him. He does it because He doesn’t want heaven without us. So, ‘He brought heaven down.’ In Him we shall reign forever (Revelation 5:10). This, the scripture affirmed: ”Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”” (Revelation 11:15 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
