“There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.” (Luke 1:5-7 KJV).
This passages gave us Zecharias and Elizabeth who both belonged to the priestly families of Abijah and Aaron, as examples of righteous waiting. In this world, when things aren't going well as we hope, we easily give up on our righteous pledge to trust God, then say "What's the use?" We ask, then think, "It surely doesn't seem to be working for me!" This aging couple remind us to not give up trusting on God in our time of waiting. We rest in His grace! His grace is sufficient. Apostle Paul reminds us with this: “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV).
Here, we find these two "well stricken in years" yet faithful followers of God, who were righteous in the eyes of God. But, sadly, their fervent desire for a child had not been granted. Still, they honored God because it’s right. Their faithfulness undergirds Luke's account of our salvation story. So, in our walk by faith, when we find ourselves in a place of dismay and about to give up, let's remember this old couple. Let's hang on like them, and remember their example showing us that our faithful wait on God opens the door for us to partake in His glorious grace.
True to the faithful and patient wait of Zacharias and Elizabeth, as we too - Mae and I wait for grands, we remain at rest as we wait. Scriptures give us this reassuring promise: “Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.” (Isaiah 30:18 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
