“And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Luke 12:29-31 KJV).
In these passages, our Lord Jesus Christ gives us a direct personal command not to make it our main personal pursuit in life for needs of material things. Yes, it is common to many in the world that needs feel like direly important and urgent, hence some are drawn with urgency to seek for it. That is what the unbelieving nations of the world do.
For us, His disciples by grace, the Lord Jesus Christ commands us not to be focused on material needs. Rather, we are to focus first and foremost on our spiritual needs which are in the Kingdom of God. The Physical needs flows through where the spiritual supply flows. It is from the Kingdom of God that our material needs are infinitely provided.
The worrying about basic needs like food, drink and clothing should preoccupy only the unbelievers. As God’s children in Christ Jesus, we must not. Our Heavenly Father, already knows what we need and has already provided it by His grace. So, we should focus instead on seeking the Kingdom of God, and all else will be added unto us. We are never forsaken. We have the Psalmist’s reassuring testimony, as it is written: “I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.” (Psalm 37:25 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
