When God Says …
“The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? And what, the son of my vows? Give not thy strength unto women, Nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.” (Proverbs 31:1-3 KJV)
These writings are words of another personality, identified as a king, named Lemuel. He talks about revelation his mother taught him. This could possibly be a pen name of King Solomon, or a wise king used for illustration. Who specifically he is, the truth of the matter these are words from God revealed through Solomon - the writer. These are words of wisdom inspired by the Holy Spirit through the perspective of a mother to her son.
This is a revelation about a mother's counsel to her son, not to dedicate his strength chasing women! A mother's words are great wealth of wisdom for sons who listen. This somehow gives some hint why the mother is the one teaching this and not the father. Just a speculation, it could possibly be a subtle way of saying, 'don't follow your father's footsteps!' A great reminder to all men! Sadly though, in his youth King Solomon wasted his strength not only chasing women but built a harem for hundreds of them. Many of them were pagans, who led him to go after other gods. Another lesson to learn from, as it cost Solomon a stain in the legacy of his reign. This caused his descendants to miss God's blessings for a dynastic rule over the whole Kingdom of Israel.
As children of God by faith in Christ Jesus, we are to walk in His grace with wisdom, so as not to be separated from the God of heaven and turn to worship idols. The cost of Solomon’s turning away from the God of his ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is a lesson for us to reflect on. Taking these words as warning for us, it is written: “And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep what the Lord commanded. Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant.” (1 Kings 11:9-11 ESV)
