The Gospel of Luke 23:55-56 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment.” (Luke 23:55-56 KJV).

With our Lord Jesus Christ laid in the grave, the work of salvation is completely finished. When He cried out "It is finished!" (John 19:30) on Friday, He fully paid the ransom price for our sins.

Having seen the Lord’s body how it is laid as they looked in the tomb, the women disciples that followed our Lord from Galilee returned to prepare spices and oils for anointing of the Lord’s body. But, they ceased in order to observe the letter of the law on Sabbath rest. In the Old Covenant, the Sabbath was the week’s Seventh day, requiring strict physical cessation from work. This marks as the exit observance of the law on Sabbath under the Old Covenant of the law. Under the, now ushering in, New Covenant of Grace, our Lord Jesus Christ Himself is our Sabbath Rest (Hebrews 4:9-10).

These passages serve as bridge between the two covenant eras. It shows the final moments of people constrained by human effort and regulatory commandments of the law. At the same time, these remind to stop trying to "embalm" your dead situations with your own strength (as represented by the spices and ointments). Instead, now we rest in our Lord Jesus Christ knowing that our resurrection breakthrough is set to come. Hence, in Christ Jesus our Lord, we now stand on victory ground. For it is written: “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:56-57 ESV).

And I say, AMEN!
