When God Says …
“And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?” (Luke 24:17-18 KJV).
This encounter of our Lord Jesus with two despondent disciples on the Road to Emmaus highlights several foundational truths. The disciples are described as downcast and sad. And we are frequently taught that worry, fear, and sadness happen when people focus on physical circumstances rather than spiritual realities. The disciples were sorrowful because they looked at the physical cross and the empty tomb with natural eyes, thinking all was over. Hence, this emphasizes that faith means looking at what our Lord Jesus has already spiritually finished. We must not be ruled by what our physical feelings or situations scream at us.
Our Lord Jesus walks right next to these disciples, yet they do not recognize Him. When you are, as these disciples, consumed by your own efforts or understanding of how things "should" have gone, you completely miss the person of Grace - our Lord Jesus, standing right next to you. Here, we see the Lord patiently walks with them, preparing their hearts and interacts to open their eyes through the Word. When the Lord asked what they were talking about with long-faces, one of them named Cleopas responded: “Are you the only one in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard what’s happened during the last few days?” He sounds like he just lost a friend.
Our Lord Jesus corrects them for being "slow to believe" what the prophets spoke. It reminds that the resurrection changes everything. Believers no longer have to beg God for them to move or strive for victory. Instead, they are called to rest in the completed victory of our Lord’s resurrection. The disciples on the road to Emmaus were mourning a tragedy, completely unaware that they were actually walking in the dawn of the greatest triumph in human history. And, we have the victory, as it is written: “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians15:57 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
