“And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.” (Luke 24:19-21 KJV).
In this instance, when our Lord Jesus Christ (incognito) asks Cleopas a follow up question: “What things?”, the disciples pour out their hearts and hopes. They describe Him as "a prophet mighty in deed and word," but confess their deep grief and confusion, stating, "We trusted that it had been He which should have redeemed Israel." With misplaced hope, they expected a political messiah to instantly liberate Israel from Roman occupation and rule.
The disciples were sorrowful because they were looking at a temporary relief rather than the ultimate spiritual victory. These disciples are stuck in a transitional limbo. Our Lord Jesus had died, but they did not yet realize or believe He had risen. They were operating under an old mindset, viewing our Lord merely as a "mighty prophet" rather than the accomplished Savior.
Reflected through the lens of grace, truly by faith in Christ Jesus, these passages warn against striving in your own understanding and effort that let natural negative emotions steal the "seed" of God's true promises. It reminds true believers to stop looking at our Lord Jesus through the lens of what they hope He will do materially, politically or religiously, and start resting in the total spiritual redemption He already "Paid in Full" at the cross. It is written “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.” (1 Timothy 2:5-6 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
