“A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.” (John 16:16 KJV).
Without the benefit of hindsight, that we now have, these Words of the Lord Jesus were confusing for the apostles to grasp on. For us who are able to see the whole picture as revealed in Scriptures, we can understand that the Lord is referring to His imminent sacrifice, death and burial. ‘A little while’ the forces of darkness are closing in. The prince of the world is about to arrest and subject Him on a mock trial of accusations with no merit. He will be taken away from the sight of His beloved disciples. Pushed around baseless hearings and trials conducted by religious Jews. Ultimately, He is condemned to be crucified by the people who He came for to save - if only they listen to the truth and believed.
Yes, for three days, the Lord’s followers won’t see Him. He shall be delivered to the sealed and guarded tomb. They, along with all those who believed on the Son of God, will be scattered and afraid. Their hopes seem fading away. Their Master is gone. Yet, again, they did not get it fully. The Lord Jesus also assured them, and us as well who rest in His grace by faith, ‘a little while ye shall see me’.
At the right time, as promised, they saw Him! He rose from the grave! Forty Days He appeared to Five Hundred of them who witnessed His resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:6). Then He returns to the Father who sent Him. Our Redeemer lives, giving us the assurance that we too shall live, being born again by faith in Him. “We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 6:9-11 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
