When God Says …
“Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.” (John 16:17-18 KJV).
It is understandable for these remaining Eleven apostles to be confused experiencing this kind of parting huddle with their Master. This setting is unprecedented. They don’t have the help of hindsight like we do, having all that transpired already written for us to reflect on. They don’t have as yet the Holy Spirit to give them wisdom as we do now the moment we believe and receive the Lordship of Christ Jesus and are born again. What they are experiencing, in this night of their last supper together, are momentous consequential time marker that will be remembered and celebrated by believers that follow. Hence, it is unfair for us to say ‘how could they not get it having been with the Lord Jesus physically for three years?’ No, we have no license to question them. But, we have the benefit of learning lessons of faith, out of the footsteps they left for us to trace on.
Only after the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ that these young apostles appreciate the value of ‘a little while’ that the Lord was talking to them. When the Holy Spirit whom the Lord promised to send them came, they too came to fully fathom the depth of the words they heard. The Holy Spirit guides them [and us] into all the truth (John 16:13) and teaches them [and us] all things (John 14:26). These are affirmed on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came to rest on each of the Twelve apostles and a group of disciples, a total of One Hundred Twenty people, in the upper room (Acts 2:1-4).
Apostle Peter stood filled with the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father and the risen Lord Jesus Christ who is now seated on the Father's right hand. He declared a quote from the writings of the prophet Joel describing the Holy Spirit’s role in our lives as believers: “And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.” (Acts 2:17-18 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
