“And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.” (Luke 21:34-35 KJV).
Reflecting on these passages through on the merit of the grace of God, gives an urgent call to rest in His grace rather than work hard relying on human effort. This warns of exhaustion and numbing of the soul that happens when people try to cope with life's stresses or numb their pain through worldly habits, rather than relying on the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We ought not be caught up focusing on the “cares of this life” with its daily worries, anxieties, the "rat race" and excessive over-indulgence that distract believers from focusing on the Lord’s heavenly provisions. If not reigned in, it “comes like a snare” that brings dangers of becoming spiritually complacent. When believers lose sight of the "blessed hope" of the Lord’s return and enamored to rely on the world, they are easily trapped by fear and anxiety. Then fall into losing God’s eternal promise of life.
Hence, we are reminded to stay motivated in the blessed hope for holy living. Not in the fear of a "sudden trap," but the joyful anticipation of our Lord Jesus Christ coming back to bring us to Himself. We must remain eagerly waiting for His coming (Romans 9:27-28) resting in His grace. It is written our Lord Jesus proclaims: “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” (John 14:3 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
