“And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: for I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.” (Luke 22:17-18 KJV).
This scene captures our Lord Jesus Christ setting up the Passover meal celebration, taking the cup with instruction to divide among them. He will be sharing the cup of wine with His Twelve apostles for kindred partaking to emphasize relational communion, joyful partnership, and the anticipation of His physical familial kingdom. We note the Last Supper follows the Passover Seder, where multiple cups of wine or juice are shared. In Luke 22:17, our Lord Jesus tells the disciples to take the cup and "divide it among yourselves," pointing to the deep fellowship and unity for those who believe, share in and through Him.
When our Lord Jesus states in verse 18 that He will not drink of the fruit of the vine again until the kingdom of God comes, this points to the future fulfillment of His reign and the ultimate joyous reunion, with all of us that believe, in the Father’s kingdom. In our today’s living as God’s children through faith in our risen Lord, the elements of the cup (the wine from fruit of the vine) is meant to be received as unhindered displays of God's grace and love. Through His shed blood we receive sustaining health, and cleansing from the curse of this world. It is not for legalistic and religious rituals. It is for our purification.
Hence, in this life as we walk in the light by His grace through faith in Him, Scriptures affirm, as it is written: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7 NIV).
And I say, AMEN!
