“A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones.” (Proverbs 14:30 NKJV)
He challenges us to keep our heart in sound condition. The health of our heart determines the quality of our life and body, both physical and spiritual. In order to keep our heart in good shape, we are to take good food and proper exercise for the heart. As we are to eat healthy physical foods, we are to have regular in-take of pure spiritual food through God's words. We are to do regular spiritual cardio exercise, in love, in thanksgiving, in worship and walking in step with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
When our heart is well fed and exercised (spiritually, that is), it is strong not to succumb to envy, hatred and any other forms of wickedness. Those are the agent of rottenness that go deep into the marrow of the bones. It destroys not just the physical body, but most importantly our spirit that leads to eternal life.
Hence, we are to strengthen the Spirit, residing in us through faith in Christ Jesus, by guarding our heart - keep it shielded from unwholesome words and tainted language of the world. They are vying for the attention of our senses. They labor hard to break in the gateways to our heart.
As our heart is nourished well, our body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit in Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 6:19), will manifest His fruit (not envy, not rottenness), as it is written apostle Paul exhorts: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”(Galatians 5:22-26 NIV)
