Proverbs 15:16-17 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God says...

“Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, Than great treasure with trouble. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, Than a fatted calf with hatred.” (Proverbs 15:16, 17 NKJV)

He gives us awareness that to be blessed is not always in abundance of possessions and having a table of sumptuous feast. True blessings come in the fear of God and the reign of His love. There is risk in possessions placed in the wrong position. It can take God's rightful First place in our hearts. Lord Jesus warns: "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?” (Luke 9:25 NIV)

Not espousing the doctrine of vow of poverty, this passage declares the fact that it is better to have less of the worldly things with awe and reverent fear of God. While having much treasures of the world without the presence of God's grace in Christ Jesus, bring turmoil. The warning of the Lord Jesus is dire and serious. In one of His parables, about the man who devoted his life accumulating material things, Lord Jesus said: "But God said to him, 'You fool!' This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' (Luke 12:20 NIV)

Giving us a picture of two dinner tables, (no offense intended to vegans) we see a table providing sumptuous fill in a vegan dinner served with love than a steak dinner grilled in hate. Great treasure and/or luxury (vegan or carnivore, no distinction) could take us away from the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, if He is not rightfully seated by faith on the throne of our hearts. He further warns: "“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 6:24 NIV)

And I say, AMEN!
