“He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, But he who hates bribes will live.” (Proverbs 15:27 NKJV)
This reminds of Achan's fate when he took some spoils from Jericho which God sternly forbidden. Jericho was the first city the Israelites took possession of after they crossed the Jordan river. Because of his greed and disobedience against God's command, Achan and his whole family were stoned to death (Joshua 7:1-25).
Yes, greed can be deadly. Thankfully, in this post-resurrection dispensation of grace, everyone is made alive by God's mercy (Ephesians 2:4-5 NIV). The Lord Jesus came with grace and truth. Hence, to the Pharisees and so-called observers of the law who wanted to stone a woman caught in adultery, He said to them: “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7 NIV)
In these days of God’s grace, there may not be physical stoning, but greediness has its dire consequences. It brings God’s curse and wrath (Colossians 3:5-6 NIV). Greed makes a person susceptible to dishonest favors and inducements. Even worse it makes a person follow the cue of wickedness, taking advantage on their victims.
The psalmist reveals their modus operandi. It’s not a model to follow. As believers in Jesus, by His grace, we are to follow His cue of righteousness. The Psalmist gave these revealing words of warning: "The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously; those the Lord blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be destroyed.” (Psalm 37:21, 22 NIV)
