When God Says …
“Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.” (John 14:28 KJV).
In his epistle to the Colossians, Apostle Paul reminds: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.” (Colossians 2:8-10 NIV). The Lord Jesus said in our passage in this reflection episode, 'I go away, and come again' He is talking of His inferior human form. In this sad and unsettling moments of uncertainties in the minds of the disciples, the Lord remained vigilant to allay their confusion and fears. He is going, in glorified form, to the Father who is greater.
The Lord Jesus, clothe with a physical body, occupies space in the physical world. Hence, we should understand what it means for him to enter and leave the world. When He says 'I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I' He alerts the disciples and us to rejoice knowing this truth. His dying in the flesh is re-entering into the Spirit realm that He was and is, in eternity past and in eternity future. In His nature in Spirit, He can always be with and in everyone of us who welcomes and believes in Him. In the physical, He was limited by space and time.
Now, as with the disciples, we have all the reasons to rejoice knowing that by grace through faith we are loved by Him. He gave Himself for us on the cross and is now with the Father. Hence, we can live in the fullness of His power by faith, as Apostle Paul testified: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
