When God Says …
“And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.” (John 14:29-31 KJV).
The Lord Jesus Christ in these passages is giving His final parting Words to cement the belief of His young disciples, as the prince of the world is about to mount an attack. Having gone deep into these reflections, we can now feel the real-time impact on the disciples' well being. We could sense it. Hearing your Master giving farewell instructions like a father or mother telling his or her children - "don't forget all that I just told you", as they go to a destination you haven't fully grasp.
On the Lord's part being in human flesh, yet knowing the state of being of the disciples' that He loved, I won't attempt to second guess. But, I could recall my mixed feelings during the last moments before flying to a war zone in Saudi Arabia, leaving Mae who just brought Sarah into the world, with Hannah very young at Six years of age, kissing them goodbye not knowing I'd see them again. I was thankful then that I know in my heart, with faith in my Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus Christ, we're held secure in their Mighty Hands. No one can snatch us from their hands (John 10:28-29). The feeling was overwhelming. Though I couldn't fully articulate it, even now looking back in hindsight. But, I know God is the One and Only Promise Keeper. His Words and Promises came to pass and always will. To those who trust in Him He assures, as He declared to Abraham: “After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”” (Genesis 15:1b NIV).
The hour has come. The Lord is ready to arise, leave the upper room and head for a face off with the prince of the world at the Mount of Olives. Hence, I can feel the eloquence of His last Words to the disciples which The Message Bible paraphrase poignantly puts, as it is written: ““I’ve told you this ahead of time, before it happens, so that when it does happen, the confirmation will deepen your belief in me. I’ll not be talking with you much more like this because the chief of this godless world is about to attack. But don’t worry—he has nothing on me, no claim on me. But so the world might know how thoroughly I love the Father, I am carrying out my Father’s instructions right down to the last detail.” (John 14:29-31 MSG).
And I say, AMEN!
