“And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.” (Luke 2:46-47 KJV).
The panic started when the young Messiah, Christ Jesus, was found missing after three days of the family’s trip back for home from Jerusalem. When Mary and Joseph realized that their son was not among their travel group, they scrambled to return back to the city to search for Him. After three days of searching, they found Him in the temple, engaged in dialogue with the teachers and scholas of the time. Amazingly, the three days mentioned several times when His parents realized that Jesus' was not with their returning group and the time they spent to search for Him can be seen as a foreshadowing of His own death and resurrection, which we know occurred three days after His crucifixion.
When Luke writes that "all that heard Him were astonished at the depth of His understanding and answers," he highlights the fact that the Lord Jesus possessed comprehension and wisdom extraordinary for someone of His age. Rather than just being precocious, He displayed deep understanding of spiritual matters and was able to engage in discourse with the religious leaders of the time.
Yes, they’re amazed of the of the Lord’s wisdom and knowledge displayed in His youthful age. And we should be more amazed as He did not come to exhibit wisdom for man’s applause. He is God Almighty. All wisdom and knowledge come from Him. He came to save you and I by His grace. In Him, we now belong in His kingdom by faith. For that, we have the more reason to be amazed and to worship Him. He is worthy! “Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:28-29 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
