When God Says …
“And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” (Luke 4:20-21 KJV).
As customary in their synagogue Sabbath gathering, an attendee would stand to read the Scriptures. In this particular day when the Lord Jesus returned home filled by the Spirit stood up for the reading and was handed the scroll. The reading was so perfectly set to be the writing of Isaiah which prophesied about Him. Hence, as He finished reading, closed and handed back the scroll, He sat down with all eyes set on Him eagerly waiting what He has to say. And, “He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:21 NIV).
The Lord's act of closing the book, handing to the minister and then sitting down, was an assertion of authority to teach according to synagogue practice. His actions signal to the people that He is about to offer His own interpretation and understanding of the passage He has just read. Hence, the people’s reactions were full of anticipation and expectation. As He boldly proclaims the fulfillment of prophecy, this is pointing to His presence and the inauguration of His mission to bring good news of deliverance and healing to the world. These verses serve as a powerful reminder for us of the Lord Jesus being the fulfillment of God's promises and His pivotal role in establishing the kingdom of God on earth. Now, God the Father in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, as we totally depend on His grace by faith, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
