The Gospel of Luke 3:10-11 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.” (Luke 3:10-11 KJV).

Now here’s a question that reflects a longing for spiritual truth and a recognition of their need for heavenly guidance. And, John the Baptist whose mission was preparing the way for the arrival of the Messiah, called people to turn away from their sinful ways and embrace a life of righteousness. The people’s question, "What shall we do then?" reflects their recognition of the need to change their ways and live in a manner that is pleasing to God. It incapsulates the profound longing of the human heart for spiritual guidance and direction.

John’s response is a call to generosity and charity, emphasizing the importance of sharing one's possessions with those who are in need. His message focuses on repentance in preparation for the coming Messiah, and his call to manifest fruits of charity and kindness as a reflection of the righteousness by grace with compassion that are inherent by faith in Christ our Lord.

The imagery of possessing two coats or an abundance of food puts the listener on the spot as one who is capable of meeting the needs of others. This reminds that where much is given much is expected. The truth is that you are blessed to be a blessing. The responsibility that comes with having more than what is required for one's own needs is divinely ordained. By urging the sharing of resources, this verse promotes a vision of community in which individuals are concerned with the well-being of others and willing to sacrifice their own comfort for the sake of those who are less fortunate. This is not an act driven by self aggrandizement or personal applause. This is an act under the guidance and unction of the Holy Spirit for the glory of God.

As with Abraham, being his heirs by faith in Christ Jesus, we are blessed to be a blessing. God says to Abraham and by extension to us too who rest in God's grace in Christ: “And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”” (Genesis 12:2-3 ESV).

And I say, AMEN!
