When God Says …
“And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.” (John 1:19-20 KJV)
These passages reveal that the 'Jews', referring to the high local political and religious leadership, sent to John the Baptist their priests and Levites. They were the professed guardians of the law from Jerusalem. Those religious leaders called Pharisees were extremely 'devout' with the tendency to be cold, arrogant, legalistic and harshly judgmental. They were mostly blinded by the corrupted doctrines of their religion, except for Nicodemus (John 3:1-2), who apparently saw the truth and became a believer of the true gospel of grace (John 19:39).
These Jews, certainly, must have read the prophecy of the coming Messiah. Hence, checking on John the Baptist whose teaching had gained following was a right thing to do for those who consider themselves caretakers of the promise and who await for coming Messiah, if only it's for a sincere motive. In answer to their question, John was so candid to clearly declare he was not the Messiah. John the Baptist stayed in his lane, well aware of his mission, as we must, too.
The Word was sent to earth by the Father from heaven because He so love the world (John 3:16). Hence, we must be in the know that our mission and purpose here on this planet is to let God love us, by totally resting in His grace through faith in Christ Jesus. It is written: “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.” (1 John 3:1-3 ESV)
