When God Says …
“Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.” (John 1:48 KJV)
Somewhat taken by surprise at the Lord's first impression assessment of his authenticity and openness, “Nathanael asked, “Where did you get that idea? You don’t know me. We just meet.” The Lord Jesus answered, “One day, long before Philip called you here, I saw you under the fig tree.”” Nathanael's question somehow seems to sound hypocritical, considering his stereotypical comment about anything good coming from Nazareth, the place where the Lord Jesus came from.
The Lord Jesus, in His response, poked holes on Nathanael's prejudicial mind. By describing what Nathanael was doing before Phillip invited him, the Lord Jesus hinted of His divine knowledge and omniscience. The Lord knows everything about us all. The minute details of who we are is open book in His eyes, as with what He knew about the simple and mundane things, like having seen Nathanael under the fig tree. The Lord sees everything we do alone in private. He knows our sins, the reason He came to save us from it.
The Lord Jesus Christ knows who we are. Sinners as we were under the curse of Adam's fall, He loved us, nevertheless. He died for Nathanael and us driven by love. It is written: “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 ESV)
