“When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.” (John 2:9-10 KJV)
These passages reveal a miraculous compression of time which is of great significance to us in speaking of the new wine from the Kingdom of God. This event reveals who Jesus is and what He did transforming water into wine. Best wine takes a long period of time to ferment from fruit of the vine. The Lord Jesus Christ who transcends time made wine out of water as it was drawn from the vessels and taken for tasting by the master of the party. Unbeknownst to him, the wine came from the jars of water.
When the master toast of the party tasted the new supply of wine given him, he exposed the world's cocktail party set up. The world serves the best wine first and when the guests are drunk, the cheap wine is served. But, in the presence of the Messiah who came to transform humanity by faith in Him through His grace, the toastmaster is in for a big new way to have a party. In His presence the best is for last!
In Christ Jesus, this setting is a metaphor for our life's transformation through grace by faith in Him. The wedding party is the analogy for our life. The wine is the symbol of the Holy Spirit, whom the Lord Jesus promised to send us. As the new wine gives new life to the party, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. It is written: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” (Romans 8:1-4 ESV)
