The Gospel of John 1:26-27 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; he it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.” (John 1:26-27 KJV)

The message that John the Baptist heralded, crying in the wilderness, was an invasion into the religious domain of that day. He revealed that the Messiah was already in their midst but they did not know it. So, when asked by these zealot religious messengers with accusatory questions about his authority to baptize, saying "Who do you think you are?" (John 1:25), John the Baptist responded that his ministry of repentance uses physical symbol of baptism with water. But the ministry of Him who is the Messiah will go far beyond physical symbolism rituals.

The Messiah is so much greater than John the Baptist that he declared his unworthiness to untie the straps of His sandals. In that culture, caring for another person's feet was the work of the lowliest servant. Declaring his unworthiness, he expressed the depth of his cognizance of the eternal God Almighty, for them who questioned him to be aware that He is already in their midst.

He is God incarnate. And, He is in the midst of humanity. To Him, of whom we being His children by grace through faith, must have the same mindset of reverence as with John the Baptist. And, as with John the Baptist, our posture of humility should be like that of our Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior. Apostle Paul exhorts us with these words: “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:5-8 ESV)

And I say, AMEN!
