When God Says …

“After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.” (John 2:12 KJV)

Capernaum was the base of the Lord's ministry. He, Mary-His mother, His half siblings and His early disciples went to stay there for a short respite after the affair in Cana. This is the place where the Lord Jesus commune most of the time and performed many of His miracles. Located on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, it is eighteen miles from Cana. A town of major importance, it is smack right on the major route of trade and commerce from Damascus to the Mediterranean Sea. Bustling and diverse, this gives a picture of hectic city activity – just like our present cities of material progress.

This is a lesson for us now to reflect on. Especially in our present congested way of living, we must not behave like the people of Capernaum. We must not allow the distractions of the world to steal our life's focus. Rather, we are to be conscious of the Lord's presence by resting in His grace through faith in Him.

For Capernaum, the Lord Jesus Christ spent time there quite regularly, but with their focus more on the material aspect of living, they totally missed Him and the great things He did. In their worldly value system, they overlooked or even have intentionally by choice did not value the most valuable treasure they could have had in their midst.

Hence, the Lord Jesus Christ declared His dismay and yearning for them, as it is written: “And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For, if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgement for the land of Sodom than for you.”” (Matthew 11:23-24 ESV)

And I say, AMEN!
