When God Says …
“Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” (John 2:18-19 KJV)
The 'Jews', who were collectively the religious and political leaders and supposedly the caretakers of the temple, were exceedingly offended by the Lord's appropriate measures against the disrespect done at the Father's house of prayers. Hence, indeed openly awed by the clean up that they should have done in the first place, they showed concurrence to it, but secretly maligned by it. The impact on their cut of the profits there off could be in their minds. For those businesses being allowed inside the temple would be impossible without the religious leadership's participation.
They demand a sign of authority to justify His action. Not satisfied of the miracle already shown purging the temple, they wanted more. Their attitude towards the Lord sets a pattern of obstinacy and unbelief. The Lord Jesus accommodated their demand. Using the temple as analogy to His body, He gave them a prophetic sign of His upcoming death in their hands and Him raising Himself to life after three days. This temple in Jerusalem is what the religious Jews say where people ought to worship. But in Christ Jesus, who now is in the midst of humanity, people can now worship in the temple not made by human hands. Yes, definitely not in buildings or 'churches' of religion. It is written: “The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.” (Acts 17:24-25 ESV)
The gist of this declaration of the Lord Jesus Christ, points to the time which was revealed in the His conversation with the Samaritan woman, who said: “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”” (John 4:20-24 ESV)
