When God Says …
“If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.” (John 12:26 KJV)
Serving is the core of what the Lord Jesus Christ exemplified during His walk among us on this planet. He came driven by love even to the point of giving His life for us. He stepped down from the majesty of heaven to come as a servant (Philippians 2:7), that we must follow as He demonstrated by washing the feet of His disciples at the upper room (John 13:1-17) before He was taken to be crucified.
How do we follow Him and serve Him? This we can discern in the life of John, the youngest of the twelve apostles. In contrast to Apostle Peter who was the oldest, Apostle John truly got hold of the Lord's message of love. John's conspicuous declarations reveal his full surrender to the Lord's love. His confession of being the beloved of the Lord, addressing himself as 'the disciple that Jesus loved' attest to his acumen to follow the Lord.
Apostle Peter on his part always boasts that he loved the Lord to the extent of stating: “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” (Luke 22:33 NIV).To which the Lord Jesus responded: ““Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”” (Matthew 26:34 NIV). Our part to follow the Lord is to let Him love us and rest in His grace through His finished work on the cross. That's how we can serve Him best and not by way of religion - working hard to impress Him.
We have this further assurance, as children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John 4:15-16 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
