“Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.” (John 12:28-29 KJV).
The scene we see in this setting shows a group of Greeks, representing the gentile nations who were outside of God's covenant with the Jewish nation, and the disciples in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. When these Greek seekers came to see Him with Phillip and Andrew, the Lord gave them a coded remark of His imminent death using the metaphor of a seed that must be buried to produce much fruit, pointing to His death and rising from the grave. Unbeknownst to them, they are amongst the fruits the Lord was referring. So, here in these passages for the benefit of them who are listening, the Lord Jesus called on the Father to put His glory on display. Yes, the Son calls on the Father to glorify His name. And they hear the Father speaks.
As they stood by, they heard it. The Father always respond to His Son's call. And the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, as He is in us and we in Him by faith, we are fruits of His rising from death. In His grace, we are given the right to become Children of God (John 1:12). He hears and answers, when we come to glorify Him and declare, as King David did: “Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together! I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” (Psalm 34:3-4 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
