When God Says …
“For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them.” Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.” (John 12:39-41 NIV).
The reverberating echo of Isaiah's prophecies continue to give light on the stubborn disdain of these religious Jews against the God of their fathers. Because they have preemptively chosen not to believe, God has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts. Hence, they cannot believe. They are totally closed and hopeless.
These people's rejection of the Lord Jesus was revealed in Isaiah's realization of the Lord's majesty. “Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”” (Isaiah 6:10 NIV).
Apostle Paul, in his encounters with the religious Jewish leaders in Rome, experienced the same stubbornness of unbelief. Hence, he said these words to them, and to all those who cling to religion in these present age. “Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.” He lived there two whole years at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.” (Acts 28:28, 30-31 ESV).
