When God Says …
“Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.” (John 11:16 KJV).
This passage pivots on Thomas (the twin), one of the twelve apostles, making some sort of "gallows humor", in response to the Lord's decision to head back to Bethany in the area of Judaea. The area is controlled by the religious Jews who want to kill Him. They are keeping watch on the Lord Jesus in order to arrest and execute Him to death. This disciple is the one who'll be known later as 'doubting Thomas' for unbelief in the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ until he sees the wounds. In this instance, Thomas believed this decision to return to Bethany is a suicide mission. Yet, he sarcastically resolved that they go along and may, as well, die together with the Lord.
The truth is, our Lord's post-resurrection revelation, affirmed Thomas' prophetic joke. Apostle Paul exhorts that through faith in our risen Lord Jesus Christ: “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 6:6-11 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
