“On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” (John 12:12-13 KJV).
People came to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration, which is the remembrance of how God spared the Israelites' firstborns when He took all the firstborns of Egypt to break Pharaoh's hardened heart (Exodus 12:1-36). The crowd were expectant of the Lord Jesus to come during the celebration as their conquering savior to deliver them from Roman oppression. They look to Him as the physical heir of their great King David recorded in Jeremiah 23:5-6 and affirmed in Matthew 21:9. The Lord however, came as servant and peaceful Savior that Zechariah prophesied in Zachariah 9:9-12. Yes, He came through the lineage of David, but He comes as a peacemaker, not as a conquering warrior.
Prepared with palm branches (ancient symbol for victory) the crowd meet and hail the Lord Jesus Christ crying, Hosanna!, for His triumphal entry in the city of David. Echoing the Psalmist's declaration, they welcome Him in glory. He came to save, that many of those in the crowd failed to see. Let us, therefore, keep rooted by faith and rest in His grace and know, He is our Savior, once and forever (Hebrews 7:25 NLT). He was, He is and always will, from the moment we pleaded: “Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!” (Psalm 118:25-29 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
