“Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.” (John 11:17 KJV)
This passage gives the time line of this sad and yet momentous event unfolding. This set the stage of the crowning miracle to be displayed for the glory of the only begotten Son of God and the Father. It is for all our benefit that we shall believe, especially those hard core religious fanatics in Jerusalem, and those who are held captive by religion and stubborn unbelief in this present age (John 11:15). This passage reveals that Lazarus was already four days in the tomb. He, therefore, died before the Lord Jesus received the summons from His friends Mary and Martha, right after the messenger left to deliver their message. And, the Lord being omniscient, knew this fact. He, therefore, deliberately delayed responding for a very important reason and lesson.
The Lord, thence, is setting a very crucial manifestation of sign and penultimate miracle to bring the unbelieving to an unarguable demonstration of His deity. He is who He says He is. The works He is doing speak loudly for everyone to hear, and show clearly as the light of day for all to see that He is God incarnate. And, now in this post-resurrection time we are in, He is in us in Spirit by our faith in Him (Galatians 2:20).
Yes, He is God with us! As the angel proclaimed to Joseph in a dream, when he was flooded with confusion, Scriptures recorded: “But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).” (Matthew 1:20-23 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
